Capoeira is a unique Brazilian dance and martial art which dates back 400 years. Combining music, dance and self-defense, it helps to increase agility, flexibility, strength, speed and coordination.
Originally developed by African slaves in Brazil, the movements were disguised as a dance to fool the slaves' owners and allow the tradition to continue. Today, this has evolved into a highly acrobatic sport which has become popular all over the world.
Capoeira York was set up in March 2005, as part of the Brazilian Guardioes Brasileiros school. We currently have around twenty regular members attending up to four sessions a week (click here for training times). We also run classes at the University of York, as the University of York Capoeira Club. Anyone is welcome to come along and join in!
